The skegs, or mast partners - heavy tapered timbers giving support to the foremast, which also allow the mast to slide backwards between them when it needs to be lowered. The short removable cross-piece and wedge hold the mast upright. The tackle visible behind the skegs is for the mizzenmast stay.
